12/7/08 Journal Entry

A year ago today, I wrote the following entry in my SNC road journal:

12/7/08, 5:05 PM, Seat 5A, Midwest Airlines flight

"COLD day in Green Bay for the Packers/Texans game at Lambeau Field today.  -3 with the wind chill when we pulled into the stadium in our limo (only half of which was heated...ugh).  Will probably be in the air for 20-30 minutes en route to Milwaukee, then it's off to Toronto, a city I've never been to before.  A cool highlight today (besides singing the National Anthem & Halftime show on the field at Lambeau) was watching Green Bay's tight end Donald Lee catch a touchdown right in front of us and us making way for him to "Lambeau Leap" into the stands.  We helped hoist him into the crowd!  Afterwards, we sang for some NFL ad agency folks, put a hurtin' on the food in our suite, and got some cool Packers gear (scarves, hats, etc.).  All in all, the game was a great time - despite the Packers losing - and the day was the highlight of the tour so far.  Everyone in Green Bay was very hospitable and friendly to us - even the suite next door to ours, as well as the Navy pilots and their crew (from the F-18 flyover!).  Small world: the ground pilot who was calling in to the guys in the air has hung out in Bloomington in years past and knows some of our friends from IU.  The airport crews are de-icing our plane right now before we can take off for Milwaukee & Toronto.  I haven't been to Canada since coming home from working on the cruise ship in Quebec for home.  I'd have to check my passport, but I think it was October of 2004.  (Random memory.)  The mini-snow drift on my window here on the plane has grown by a good 2" since I boarded.  We hit the airport at the right time, it seems.  Oh yeah: today marks the 10-year anniversary of the concert @ the Musical Arts Center in Bloomington, from which "12 Days" was filmed!  Also, it's Dan's 32nd birthday today."

12/7/09, Room 230, Iowa House Hotel, Iowa City, IA, 10:57 PM

Funny how some things change (negative temperatures and snow) and some things stay the same (Dan's birthday, the anniversary of the "12 Days" filming, the Packers are playing tonight on Monday Night Football...).  We have an early start tomorrow with a TV appearances in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, a workshop with a local choir on campus, and a sold-out show in Iowa City.  Time for bed...5 AM lobby call.  It's going to be a long, cold day...wish us luck and keep sending prayers for safe travel, great health, and good spirits our way!  We'll be home in 17 days, but still have a lot of work left to do before we get to share the holiday with our families.  Thanks, from a hotel room in Iowa, for the support, encouragement, and well wishes.  We appreciate you all.

PS - it's safe to say we're as cookied out as we could be on the bus, to all you beautiful bakers out there.  Thanks to everyone who has pitched in and brought a slice of home our way after our shows; we simply can't put away all the treats everyone is graciously giving us, though :)  Good night!

Will be in NY for your concert on Dec. 17 - my birthday. Supposedly bought the last 2 tickets for the show. Am taking my daughter, who will be celebrating her birthday on Dec. 19. Can't wait!

Although I seem to be 2 years late to this party, I saw your '12 Days of Christmas' yesterday for the first time and I cannot stop sending it to all of my friends. I'm an avid a cappella fan at Bates College where I'm a junior and until yesterday I thought we had some pretty damn good groups, but watching a few of your performances from 1998 I was absolutely blown away. Like you all, I am away from home for another week and a half (all the way in Denmark for a semester) until Christmas, but I just wanted to thank you all for your videos online and your music that's helping me get into the holiday spirit. You guys are all insanely gifted and I'm sad to say I come home 2 days too late to catch you in New York, but I'm sure one day I'll make it to a show. I will keep up with your blog and I wish you all the best of luck in your upcoming shows, I'm sure you are bringing joy to so many people this season with your music so on behalf of myself and other fans, thank you. Keep doing what you're doing and safe travels.

Bundle up the overflow of cookies and tie them to the top of the bus - i.e., freeze them! Then you can share them with your families when you get home. :-D

It's been an amazing time for you guys. My guess is that touring has had both highs and lows that you may not have expected, and I'm sure you are all weary. You're doing a great job of leaving that behind when you are on stage, though, so hang in there. Continued prayers for your success and safety.

Thank you for sharing the 'pennies' for your thoughts. Your countdown to home resembles the countdown to my husband's past deployments. You'll be home soon, though sometimes it feels like an eternity. You guys put a lot of heart and soul into what you do and clearly it's well-received and appreciated by one and all. We are grateful for your talents, especially when it comes to singing tunes that remind us of this blessed season. Prayers for continued health, safe travels and uplifting spirits coming your way. God bless.

If ever a blog note reminds me of the sentiments and thoughts behind your favorite song by LRB, "Reminiscing", this one is it (how's THAT for an oblique reference?). Another common element: fans on their feet, smiling, clapping, hootin' and hollerin', hugging, expressing thanks and wishing you guys ONLY safety and the best of all that life can offer and bring you. It's a blessing to be among them and to be able to enjoy the gifts of the men of SNC. The Murat show in Indy was incredibly fun, and the roof-lifting cheers at its end were surpassed only by the reverent silence as you finished off mike with "Oh, Holy Night". Thank you for helping us all hear The Reason for The Season so beautifully expressed. It's something Kathy and I will never forget. Travel well, be VERY encouraged, and finish this leg of your new journey stronger than ever. WLA.

Interesting to see how things change (or not) over the years. I'll bet you weren't getting this many cookies last year!!

I hope all of you are well, and I wish you safe travels for the last 17 days of the tour... Before you know it, you'll be off touring again for the spring!
