Dan Ponce to Join WGN News in Chicago

Hello Chasers - we have some bittersweet news to let you all know about. Straight No Chaser’s founding member, Dan Ponce, has recently accepted an offer to return to Chicago and become a general assignment reporter on WGN Channel 9. As you may remember, Dan spent 3 years as a reporter on ABC7 in Chicago and left the post last year to head out on to the road with Straight No Chaser full time. However, with this new offer and his upcoming marriage, Dan has decided to head back home and settle down once again. Dan has been a major contributor to Straight No Chaser’s success over the past few years and we will miss him dearly. But we are happy that we will retain his friendship and support as Straight No Chaser continues.

Dan elaborates "It has been incredible recording and touring the country with 9 amazing friends and musicians. I'm very sad to be leaving, but very happy knowing the group will continue strong without me."

We will be sending Dan off in style as he finishes off the residency at Harrah’s in Atlantic City this summer with the rest of Straight No Chaser. Please join us in wishing Dan the best of luck in his new endeavor, and we can't wait to see you all on our upcoming Fall Tour!

We saw Straight No Chaser in Kansas City, Missouri and knew something was wrong....you weren't there! We just love your voice. However, the concert was absolutely great and we had a blast. The sold out crowd loved it too....two encores. Guess we'll have to buy more CDs that you are in! Congrats on your upcoming wedding and new job. You made the right decision even though your fans will be missing you. Take care.

Like a few others, I just heard the news. Its a shame to lose one of the founding members and frankly the leader of the group. Living in Chicago, I will see Dan on the news, but hopefully he'll make a one night appearance when the group comes back to Chicago this winter.

I am so sad about this news. Dan was my favorite, favorite too. Yes, and no offense. You guys are all my favorites. I posted more on Dan's profile.

I just heard the news and I'm bummed! Dan was my favorite (no offense). I got tickets for Newark Ohio and am in the 4th row. Bummer

Ok.......It has taken some time for me to digest this news. I rarely post but always keep up with what SNC is doing and I was so sorry to hear that another original member is leaving; hell, the founding member at that! But I would like to say congratulations to Dan and his bride-to-be. I am sure this was not an easy decision for you. Thanks for the years you shared your talent with everyone. You have accomplished more and created a legacy that will go on, which is more than most people will accomplish in their lifetime. You have a lot to be proud of and great friendships to cherish. Congratulations and good luck.

May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind always be at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, and rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand. ~Old Irish Blessing~ Hazzah!!!! When God closes a door He opens a window. Good luck on your new journey and hopefully you will make special appearances with SNC if opportunity allows. I will miss you.

Bittersweet, indeed! Dan will surely be missed :( ....but as they say, life goes on.......and so to SNC - looking forward to more of you, guys!....we're still here....CHASING the straight NO CHASER :-) .... to Amy and Dan - the best of the best in your journey as one.....and thank you so much, Dan, for starting this group.....hope Atlantic Records will release DVDs of SNC's performances as their live performances are much, much better (if I may say so) - though I do have their CDs :-)

First of all, Congrats to Dan! He will be missed. His singing ability and personality just fit so well with Striaght No Chaser. I have been to two conerts with him in the group and they were incredible nights for me and my family. I wish him all the best. For the rest of the guys, keep Thgoing strong on your journey. You are so close to hitting it big, so you have to go on without Dan. This is some bitter sweet news and hard to swallow.

Talk about mixed emotions. A lot has been said. Dan, congratulations to you & Amy and I wish you all the happiness in the world as you begin your adventure together. I am happy for both of you. Good luck & happiness in your new job, as well. I know you will be great. I will miss seeing you with SNC. I am very thankful to have DVD's with you in them and that I had the chance to see you in Seattle this year. I know the rest of SNC will miss your talent & presence. I'm sure they will do a great job with your replacement. God Bless you & keep you.

Just too sad beyond words. Good luck Dan. You will be missed immensely. :*(

SNC won't be the same without you, but who could possibly fault you for wanting to settle down and make a life with your new wife?? Best of luck to you!!

You will be missed in all our hearts Dan! I wish you the best of luck as you return to Chicago!

Wow! I'm so happy for you, Dan (and Amy!), but wow. I know the SNC guys will go on, and there is a lucky person out there to step in! Makes my tickets for Aug 28 even more special!

As sad as I am to see Dan leaving the group, but when I need a "Dan" fix, I can check him out on TV. Even though I live in Virginia, my cable network carries WGN. When I need a "fix" and missing living in Chicago area, I go to WGN so have been watching it off and on for the last ten years. Just wish Dan much happiness, a blessed wedding and a wonderful life with his about to be bride!

Dan-- Although the Chasers of the world will be saddened to see you leave the group...we understand your decision. We have enjoyed your committment to the music and the group and your fans. I will be seeing you in AC next week and will be sure to get pics!!! God Bless and please blog in every once in awhile so we know what is new!!!

Whoa, Dan, this is indeed bittersweet. I guess forming a group to meet girls panned out for you! Actually, you have probably left quite a few broken hearts along the way over the years. We will miss you and all that you have done with and for SNC's band of brothers from the start to the present. Since you are so multitalented, it only is right that you seize opportunities to use your skills and talents as your life goes forward. You have put together a professional group of wonderful men who are appreciated for their skills and talents as well. What a legacy for a young man with an amazing future in yet another career! Good luck and much happiness to you and Amy and Chicago (lucky WGN!) At the July 4 appearance in New York, it was quite apparent that you are totally at ease behind a microphone---either singing or reporting. Make sure WGN gives you lots of face time---your fans still need to follow your career in and out of SNC. Do keep up the composing and arranging. Something I learned from Walt's recent interview was that you are a classically trained pianist. Is there anything you do not do? Proud of you. Proud of SNC. Many blessings and much success to you and SNC. Thank you for sharing your talents and chemistry with us. Y'all make us want more!

Bittersweet, wow, no joke!! Dan, you created a new sensation!!! (There's another song you guys could do!!! New Sensation) Anyway, thank you for growing and sharing your many musical talents!! Music, the universal language, you made a dialect popular! You started this group "from nothing", your own words on the DVD from 1998! You did it your way! I'm eternally grateful and will miss you performing! I wish you every joy and blessing on your life journey, and of course, happiness with Amy!! I hope the group will keep us informed from time to time as they used to with Mike and Steve (come on guys, how are they?? and Kevin and Patrick, how are they?). Every voice in SNC is unique, yours will be greatly missed, as will your other musical talent and contributions!! I suppose SNC has found someone to take your spot, and we will love him as we love Ryan, Mike, Seggie and Tyler, yet you will never be replaced! God be with you!

I'm so bummed out for myself not getting to see you (Dan) in November but I wish you happiness with everything and thank you for bringing us such great music - we owe you for founding this great group. I wish you even more success with your job and marriage than you recieved with this fantastic group! You will be missed!!
Kathy Mendoza's picture

Sigh...I'm so sad, but am so grateful you decided to start this group many moons ago and have brought so much joy to myself and the many many Chasers. Thank you so much for sharing your talent with us. I will never forget me asking you in October if you proposed to her yet and how totally baffled you were. All I had to do was see a few of your pictures with her and it was ridiculously obvious she was the one. I truly wish you the best.

So, I'll have to admit: I was very saddened to hear that you won't be touring with the guys anymore, but in all truth, I wondered how you would be able to plan your changing personal life around all of the craziness of the "rock star life." I knew it would come eventually, but, like the others posting before me...not so soon. What you started was, and IS...nothing short of amazing. I found an old essay you wrote listing your top goals in life...you've accomplished SO much, but now it's time for you to make your own way. 1. Find your wife. (Check, and she's a very lucky lady!) 2. Win the Little 500. (Uhm...Bike's...in the shop? ^_^) 3. Graduate with a 4.0. (A+ for effort.) 4. Create a nationally known acappella group. (I think this one's a BIG check, with enough loyal fans to share with the 9 remaining guys...and of course, the newbie.) We all wish you and Amy the very best; you deserve nothing less. (Aaaannd, if there's a reunion show at IU, yes, I'll be there, ^_^.) God bless, Dan...you've given us all a great gift, and we hope you have a successful reporting career! We'll miss you. (Please be sure to carry alcohol towelettes for any random fans that may or may not try to get to close and personal. Thanks! ^_^) S.J.

Dan: Nothing but best wishes on everything that you dream and strive to achieve!!! You've lead by example when it comes to dreaming big and working hard! Truly admirable & inspirational! Thank you. :) Many blessing to you & Amy as you start the next stage in your life together!!
Susan7103's picture

Dan Dan Dan....you deserve much happiness, but I'm going to be selfish and ask you to devote some of your considerable talents to making sure SNC doesn't dissolve on us when others get married and have kids (e.g., Ryan and Lauren already oogling babies)!!!! Please tell us that you guys are figuring out plans to stay together and still have personal/family lives, which you certainly should have in life. Wow. Sniffle sniffle. You're already innovating by making a cappella so popular, and now you (Dan) have to help other touring musicians by creating a way to keep families together while having a great music career. An Idea: Establish the SNC School of Music in NYC (teaching a cappella, etc. - AND performing in your own theater), locate everybody there including jobs for wives, and then tour in the summer and winter for a few weeks - at large, sold-out venues. Dan can be a visiting professor of multiple music skills. Although this news is sad, I wish Dan much happiness with Amy and his Chicago life. If you're chosing love over a singing career, I applaud that for sure. But I really hope that he wouldn't create a group without insuring that it stay together for more than a few years.... Sorry if all this sounds a bit nutty, but you've all had a huge impact already on millions of people who'd love to see SNC around for a good long time. Sending blessings!

Dan, All I can add to this is how thankful and grateful I am that you started this phenomenon all those years ago. We will all miss you, but your reasons in leaving just show me once again what a truly class act you have created. You certainly showed how much you cared for your fans in making us an integral part of your life when you proposed onstage. Your very public declaration of love was such a heart touching moment, how can anyone fault you for wanting to be with Amy to start your life together. Your songs, your voice, your humor, your presence have touched and made a difference to so many people. I can but little imagine how the rest of "the guys" who have lived so closely feel about the change just seeing and knowing how much this announcement has affected your fans. Your idea to start that little acappella group was life changing t so many people in so many ways. It just boggles the mind. May God bless you and Amy as you begin your life together and may He bless and keep "the guys" in HIs hands as they deal with the changes to come. And now I will have one more thing to add to my itinerary whenever I visit my son and his girlfriend in Evanston....watch you on channel 9.
