March SNC PBS Special

March 1, 2010

So...we've heard that there is a bit of confusion regarding the Straight No Chaser PBS special.

Let's set the record straight: This is NOT a totally brand new special.

Although it was filmed at the same time as the “Holiday Edition” special (same venue, etc.), there will be 5 new non-Holiday songs. The concert will air throughout PBS’ annual March Pledge Drive. The DVD edition of the Live In New York special will be available as a special gift to PBS patrons.

Hope this helps!

redhead, I was thinking more in terms of the general PBS public than of current fans. Sorry I wasn't clear.

    Redhead-

I'm sure that you will get many phone numbers from us. I will keep you in mind when it airs March 11th in the Cleveland, Ohio market. Here is the listing for WVIZ:

STRAIGHT NO CHASER: LIVE IN NEW YORK
    Thursday, March 11, 7:30pm
The a cappella phenomenon Straight No Chaser, whose quirky version of “The 12 Days of Christmas” was a popular sensation, provides a captivating and entertaining performance for all. The male vocalists marry impeccable harmony with just the right amount of humor. This special presents a mix of classic hits from the 1950s and 1960s, the Motown era and contemporary pop hits, all with the classic SNC twist.

"won't that be a little weird in March"

I'm still catching flack at work for listening to Christmas music. Not weird at all ;)

WebCrew: is it going to have some of the holiday songs, though? And if so, won't that be a little weird in March? Or are they "replacing" those with the new ones?

SheriS, you do know that you have to deduct the value of the DVD from your contribution before you report it, right? Donations to non-profits only "count" if you don't receive anything for them in return. Therefore, is you made an $85 pledge, you can deduct something like $60 or $65 of it.

    Betty897X:
Via my experience with my PBS station, I did buy the Christmas PBS DVD but it is a tax deductible contribution to the station and the DVD is the perk you receive along with a tax credit! You are supporting the cause and getting something you value--DVD and continued service from PBS!

Unfortunately neither of my local PBS stations is airing the program during the pledge drive, nor do they have the DVD as a pledge gift.

If someone would be so kind as to post the information on your PBS station which is offering this during their drive (when, where, level of pledge required, phone number) I'd be happy to call them & make a pledge.

    Thanks.

Just got word that Live in New York will air in Seggie's home town on March 10th (Detroit).

Michael, that's a good question. As Betty below says, it's an added expense for the stations. However, obviously they don't all know who SNC is...yet. I think more people just need to call and/or email their station and keep bugging them. I told the guy at our station, that if they don't show it, I will contact a station out of town and donate to them since I really wanted that DVD. I immediately got a response with a date and time. When the show started showing again in January, he was hosting the show and went on and on about how great they were. :-) Another convert.

Well then my next question is: Why wouldn't ALL PBS Stations and markets air this program. Obviously, SNC has a huge following and this will generate exposure for them and revenue for the stations. Just so you all know as well, when I spoke to Michele at PBS, I ask if she knew who Straight No Chaser was...her answer was "No".

Betty, that's my understanding, and definitely the way it is with our local station.

Michael -- I'm no expert and perhaps someone will correct me -- but it's my understanding you can't BUY it through PBS, it's just a special gift for those who donate a certain amount to the stations that air the SNC special during pledge drives. Like I said, if I'm wrong, someone please correct me.

I am so confused? I view the web chat with the guys from a few months ago and they said that the only way to get the DVD of the "Live In New York" special was to go through PBS. I just called PBS and spoke to a very nice woman named Michele and she said the only thing available was the two holiday CDs and "With A Twist" CD. Nothing in her system about the DVD Concert. I asked if it could only be available through specific market stations and the answer was maybe. I looked at my local PBS station web site and they have no content what-so-ever for Straight No Chaser. Perhaps agents and marketing people could stir the pot a little with these stations. If more of them are promoting our boys, that would be good, right? My wife and I contribute to our local PBS station annually; not much in these times but we still make a point to do what we can. Our son grew up with PBS and it really is the "best television on television...for kids". Sorry, I let my SNC passion get the best of me.

No luck finding the air dates here in the San Francisco bay area. *sigh*

Ryan, will the DVD have any more on it this time around, or will it be the same one that came out in December?
