A Rare Walt Blog: #3 The Airtight & Arranging for A Cappella
    Posted by
    April 25, 2011

It has been long enough and it’s time for another installment of “A Rare Walt Blog” from yours truly.  Been on vaca the past week.  I've now read enough books, walked enough beach, and listened to enough fantasy baseball podcasts to no longer justify not checking back in and letting my bloggish thoughts expunge.  So here goes...

For those who follow me on the Twitter or have listened to the fabulous SNC FanChat, you might have heard me mention my second musical creative outlet - other than SNC. I speak, of course, of the a cappella sensation, the one and only Walter Chase and The Airtight.

Now, before you go surfing the web or Wiki to learn more about this side project (BTW, anyone that wants to create The (definitive) Airtight Wiki page is more than encouraged and welcomed), know that The Airtight is not performing live or touring, has ANY albums available for sale or have anything official, like a website or even a group photo on record (yet, yet, yet and yet).

The Airtight is the name of the "group" that I use to record my arranging demos for SNC, our management and our creative team (record label, producers, etc). Members of this group include simply… me: I sing all of the parts.  The reason I record with The Airtight is so the guys can hear an arrangement fully "performed", taking the guesswork out of if it will work a cappella.  Besides using these demos for SNC, I have created recordings for other groups to have for their rehearsal purposes.

For any Chasers out there looking for a tip on how to arrange for a group, my first suggestion is to record/demo it. There are a lot of reasons I find this essential, but mainly just so you can hear if you've got it right before bringing it in to rehearsal for the sometimes nervous "first impression". Is a particular section too busy or kind of boring?  What vowel sounds best for the pre chorus?  Where should vocal percussion be used and taken out?  A lot of things can be done if you arrange with piano or guitar or whatever, but until you hear it actually sung you never really hear how it's going to sound.  Also, once I get the basic parts down, it's fun to just loop a section of the arrangement and try to write new stuff overtop to make it better.

What you need to create your own Airtight recording?  Buy a USB mic (I suggest one that you can wear with headphones so your hands are free) and open up Garage Band or the PC cheap version of Garage Band. That's all. If you cant sing the bass part, find a fellow bass or use a bass midi instrument that sounds close enough to a bass voice. Once it sounds good enough to you, share it with a friend or with someone(s) that you know will give you constructive feedback. Last step for me is using Finale (music software) to write out the sheet music for rehearsal. If you don't have Finale or don't want to waste time writing it out, just use your demo recording to isolate the parts for your group to learn.

Back to The Airtight: Now, if you're like me, and you loooooooove listening to Walt and Walt, and even more Walt, well The Airtight is just for you.  A lot of people (ok, not a lot of people, maybe two tops - one including my mom) have asked: "Walter, will we ever get a chance to hear these Airtight demo recordings?” Unless you're a guy in the group or my “fortunate” spouse (over and over and over again while I record it), Airtight recordings are not publicly available.  However, and I would like to announce here for the first time, I WILL be releasing full albums of The Airtight in the very, very, very distant future.  The only released recording The Airtight currently has is of "The SNC FanChat Theme Song", featuring Charlie on bass.

#TheAirtightFunFacts: The number of members (“Walts”) in The Airtight varies anywhere between 5 to approx 38, making it a hybrid of a small quintet up to a massive collection of “Walts” galore. I, of course, sing all of the solos, with a couple of exceptions (Luginbill sang the solo for my demo of "The Man Who Cant Be Moved" 3,000 miles away from his own home studio).

The Airtight took the past week off on vaca here in Mexico, but will be hard at work next week continuing to write for SNC's next album and our brand-new show for this summer in Atlantic City (expect 95% new music from our show last year). The group will all be in Bloomington, Indiana this coming weekend for its 15-year reunion of Straight No Chaser.  We will be performing our own set (3-4 songs) as well as a song or two with the current group at IU.  We leave from there to head back to the UK to perform with the great Barry Manilow for four dates at the O2 Arena. Keep checking back here for updates. If you don’t already, follow us all on Twitter (yes, even Ryan), thank you all for your continued support and making SNC so special for us all everyday.

I am very grateful for your explanation of the steps and techniques that go into arranging a number for SNC. I've wanted to ask you how you do the arranging at every "meet and greet" (there have been six for me) but knew it would be a lengthy response, so I've always suppressed my curiosity. So glad I saw the connection to Twitter to read your blog. I've also wondered if you might be a jazz fan. So much about you suggests an acquaintance with the style and psyche of a jazz buff or jazz performer. I would love to see an arrangement for your extremely talented tensome of something like Stars Fell on Alabama, Tenderly, April in Paris, A Foggy Day, Misty, Bobby Darin's Beyond the Sea...I'm sure you could come up with dozens more. I realize these are more Standards than pure jazz, but they are so often performed by jazz artists. I think SNC could do wonders with some of them. Just thinking...

No tickets left for the Cupertino, CA concert? Northern California needs another concert date!

Or might "Walter, Walter, and SpongeWalter" be taken more seriously?

I like Mary's "Walt, Walt, and SpongeWalt." It sounds like a law firm. ;-)

Greetings Walt, Walt, Walt, Walt and Walt, etc. (aka The Airtight) ... oh, and SpongeWalt (don't want to forget anybody), OUTSTANDING Blog! Do you know why? This blog was "meaty", as in "In and Out" burger meaty. It had everything an SNC Blog should have and more for news, technical know-how info, and fun. What is even more outstanding is that Ryan gave you kudos in the com box to your twitter mention dig, and ended it with his twitter handle info. HaHa! Nice, Ryan!! Loved the info on how to accomplish a faux The Airtight recording, and I am truly amazed at 38 Walts. I bet that could get loud... Walt. You never cease to amaze and inspire me (us)!! I am so grateful to be acquainted with SNC and Walter Chase, who is totally awesome in so many ways. It is interesting that we are called "Chasers", which could *also* mean we are Walter Chase fans... just musing. I hope your weekend at IU is wonderful for all of SNC, and that you take London by storm. Considering how busy twitter has been with UK followers, who Randy has been answering and keeping up with very nicely since the last London trip, you should have a very successful little run there this time. Looking forward immensely to seeing all of you in AC and this fall. Very truly your devoted Chaser, Mary in Texas

THIS JUST IN: On behalf of the SNC FanChat, I would like to ask a question... What are the origins of the name "The Airtight"? ...And now back to our regularly scheduled programming.
straightnofreebaser's picture

Airtight? Not too sure about it. Accordingly, I humbly offer the following: - Waltiplicity; - Walter and the Chasettes; - The many minds of Walter Chase; - Walter Chase's Dissociative Identity Disorder; - The Freudian Anomaly; - Walt, Walt, Walt and Walt; - Gremlins; - The must've been Walt, could've been Walt . . . Walt, Walt, Walt; - Doppelangers Ball; - Walter Chase and the Walter Chase Band; - Prepubescent Walt, Teenage Walt, College Walt, Adult Walt and Barry White; and - The One Man Band with a more diverse skill set than the whole Mets roster. For your consideration.

Thanks, Walt! Your blogs may be rare, but they are worth the wait. Looking forward to new stuff this summer in AC, and to The Airtight's first album. I plan on being a Chaser well into the very, very, very distant future & beyond! Random thoughts: Shaina- I also thought of your photo of 5 Shainas when I read your comment. (Great minds, Kathleen!) Also, the phrase "Sponge Blog Square Pants" popped into my head as I read this, Sponge Walt. :)

What an amazing blog Walt. Thanks so much for sharing it with us. Not many people would take the time and effort to explain it as well as you did. Really catching up with Ryan on the "Fantastic Blog" category. We keep asking so many questions, and you guys just keep answering them for us. Just goes to show how special you guys really are!

Walt - A couple of thoughts/comments 1st - I think the four of us @ SNC FanChat feel pretty damn privileged to be associated with the only released "Airtight" tune. Thanks to ALL of the Walts and Charlie for putting it together for us. 2nd - Do the guys (other 9 SNC guys) get along with ALL of the Walts, SOME of the Walts or NONE of the Walts? Kay - great idea on the T-Shirt. Maybe get Carla involved in that. Of course you know what will happen......All of the Walts will #BlameCarla Dave

I don't know if you saw it, but I recently asked this question on a discussion thread. I am so glad to find your answer here, as it certainly deserved its own "rare Walt blog". I'm surprised that my guess would not have been that far off, but I could never have guessed 38!!! I thoroughly enjoyed reading the more technical aspects of how you do what you do! I knew it was alot of hard work you were putting in, and will continue to pray, when you post especially, for divine inspiration as you do what you do so well. You are amazingly talented, and thanks again for sharing this blog with us. I can hardly wait to hopefully see you in AC with 95% new music?! (be still my heart!) I hope you'll consider keeping the 50's medley in, 'cause I just fell in love with you guys all over again watching Kary's video of you guys doing that (not that I ever fell out of love with you guys!) Its just THAT good! God bless you and all of your hard work Walt, and give you direction, and the same for the other SNC members. Thanks again!

Walt, this was fascinating! Thank you for all the behind-the-scene details. I've always wondered just how the arranger works his magic with a song--and you are one of the best! Can't wait for "Walter Chase and The Airtight" CD, T-shirt, etc--count me in, I'm already a fan. Thanks for all the hard work you do (during your 'time off', no less!) and extra kudos to the dear spouse/trusted critics who listen to each and every revision! *Kathleen's idea of Shaina doing one of her fab composite photos for the WC&A cd is genius! Looking forward to all the new SNC material! Kay

Thanks! That was interesting - and I actually learned something, too. Rare Walt Blogs shouldn't be as "rare" ;)

Awesome blog, Walt. Thanks for the great explanation, and for all the hard work you put into arranging music for the group. Can't wait to hear the new music! :)

LOVE this!! Thanks Walt, Walt and the other Walt! So happy to hear that you had/are having a nice vaca in Mexcio. It sounds like you're rejuvenated and ready for all that's coming up next! Especially enjoyed #TheAirtightFunFacts. 38 Walts. That's amazing. No wonder you're arrangements are pure genius... Can't wait for the summer, the new cd, and the tour!! :) Best.Group.Ever.

Re-reading this just winds me up! Wow. Walt, you are so fabulous. And 95% new music?! *jumps up & down with glee* CAN'T FLIPPIN' WAIT.

Walt, thanks for the great explanation! I have *very* little music background and no knowledge at all of recording, so this was quite interesting and I understood pretty much all of it. On the other hand, I am barely capable of comprehending such musical talent in so many areas....singing, writing, arranging, recording, and who knows what else? Great blog.
Laurie_2's picture

As for lack of a bass singer, how about: Record it while singing two or three times the normal speed and at a one octave higher. Then slow it dowwwwnnnnnn... Used to work for me as a kid when I'd turn the record player off while it was playing. I thought that guy always sounded awesomely creepy! No wonder my mom used to yell at me! :)
laura_9's picture

my question is simply: do all the Walts in Airtight sport a beard?
LovedeAcapella's picture

Me! I want the album AND the tshirt. Or at least the digital version of the SNCFanChat Theme Song. Will settle for an SNC arrangement of a Duran Duran song, Dueling Banjos, or The Devil Went Down to Georgia. Great blog, Walt. Nicely played, Ryan.

I can't compete with this. Fantastic blog, Walt. Thanks for the Twitter dig, too, at the end. Ryan http://www.twitter.com/ryansongs

This blog = very helpful. Thanks for the pointers; very glad to know you had a great vacation! Have an awesome time at the reunion and London...looking forward to seeing SNC and The Airtight in Atlantic City. ^_^ P.S. 38?!?! Holy track madness. You, sir, win.

I just found out the fantasticness (yes, it's a word - even if it's not any dictionary) that is Garage Band last night while playing with it and adding track upon track...thanks for telling us how you do it - and add us to the "maybe 2" that want to hear it - I think it'd be incredible!

Walt, this was SOOO fascinating! Simply put, you amaze me.

Thank You Walt! Loves the background into "The Airtight's" Look forward to the distant future where one can hear these recordings. I'm enough of a music geek to enjoy behind the scenes stuff, thanks again!

I think The Airtight's first album should be called "A Rare Walt Blog".

Awesome blog, Walt! Thanks for the in-depth explanation! This music nerd loved every single detail. :)
