Unless you are a family member or friend of mine, you know me first and foremost as one of the ten guys in SNC.   When I tweet, I realize that when 95% of people who look to read a tweet from me cares only what I have to contribute regarding Straight No Chaser - not my passion for sports, not what food I’m eating at the time and not my opinion on the twelve movie I’ve seen that week. With all of that said, I guess that’s what is great about Twitter and more broadly the world.  If you’re bored with something or someone, you can “unfollow” or simply tune out that individual.  That premise is how I justify #MovieWalt.  I enjoy tweeting and commenting on this group and do my best to make it the majority of my contributions.  But once a year, I go movie crazy.

#MovieWalt kicks into gear after the fall tour and concludes the night of the Academy Awards.  By no one’s motivation but my own, I take it upon myself to watch everything that has been nominated or movies that I believe will be nominated during my January and February’s down time.  Here are my findings of what I thought was the best of the best this past year in movies along with my predictions of Oscar night 2012.

    Walt’s Top 10 Movies for 2012:

#10 Hugo -  Blown away, visually spectacular, screenplay outstanding. Wish I would have seen in 35mm, just don't dig 3D

#9 A Better Life - Demián Bichir knocks it out of the park. Everyone that cares about the illegal immigrants debate should be forced to watch

#8 Extremely Loud/Incredibly Close - Tribute to NYC, captures every emotion so well. Bravo Thomas Horn - 1st role ever!?!?

#7 Margin Call - Only nominated for screenplay, but overall one of the best. Underrated, powerful & important

#6 Warrior - Nearly on par with "The Fighter" which is high praise.  Don't get ultimate fighting?  Neither do I & I love this movie

#5 Iron Lady - Name best actress Oscar after Meryl Streep, unreal. King Speech will steal thunder (having won last year & being so similar), might have liked this more

#4 The Descendants - Beautiful, screenplay & Clooney outstanding. Be prepared to be depressed for its entirety. Good 4 Hawaiian tourism

#3 Moneyball - Wife enjoyed as much if not more. Never cared for Jonah Hill until now: Outstanding. Pitt solid. Absolute must see

#2 Ides of March - Beyond outstanding. How is it not nominated for best picture? Strongest cast performance outside The Help

#1 The Help - So solid, best cast of anything I've seen yet. Screenplay outstanding. Must see if you haven't

Honorable mention: Crazy Stupid Love, Bridesmaids, Beginners, Drive

Walt’s “Boo List” for 2012 (movies I despised):

The Artist - Silent film, not for everyone (not sure for me). Recommend for folks watching nominations, too artsy otherwise

Midnight in Paris - Couldn't wait for it to end. Pretentious, predictable. Need an encyclopedia set to follow. In a word: BOOO!

Tree of Life - Beautiful, epic, out there, & not for me. I didn't get it. Deeeeeep, long, left confused. Speechless in a bad way

    Hangover 2 - Money grab

and now... Walt's Oscar Picks 2012:

Full disclosure: Movies I did not see that are nominated in these categories: A Separation, Albert Nobbs, My Week With Marilyn, Tinker Tailor Solider Spy, War Horse, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

… Just my opinions.  For the record, I was a “Social Network” supporter last year when “The King’s Speech” took it all.  Nothing wrong with being wrong as long as you enjoyed the movie.  Enjoy the Oscars, I’ll be watching (and tweeting of course).

I agree on Ides of March, it was a brilliant film and I really can't believe it wasn't nominated for more than it was.. that and Drive was absolutely skipped over (Ryan Gosling theme here?) No seriously, Drive was brilliant and had a fabulous Music soundtrack associated with it as well. On that note, I was happy to see The Artist win. I found it a nice break from the norm and was so well done.

WAUW 6 out of 8.... impressed! And keep those tweets coming :P

I'll read whatever you post whether its SNC related or not! I love hearing from you guys. Thanks so much for sharing with us :) I haven't seen all the recent movies, but since you've mentioned quite a few, I'm gonna be sure to check them out! I'm anxious to see Hugo. I've heard its excellent!
Gabriella's picture

@michelle i could not have said it better:)

1. Whether it's SNC related or not, I enjoy reading your posts, tweets, blogs, etc. Walt. You & all the guys have lives outside of SNC (& rightfully so...) & personally I feel blessed that you choose to share any part of them with me/us (your fans). You don't have to. It is a privilege that I don't take lightly & I appreciate you for it. So tweet, post, & blog away. Please! 2. I haven't gotten to watch very many movies lately so I don't know a lot about the nominees, but I enjoy your reviews about them, love this blog, & will definitely have to check out some of the above-mentioned movies soon! Thanks for the #WaltsMovieNight ideas... :)

Aaaaaand score two for Walt!! Man, this guy is good! :)

Good choices, Walt. I would like to see the Help win, but so much has been said about The Artist, it'll probably go to the Artist. I did see War Horse. I loved it. The book was better, but I did enjoy the movie.
Maria Fulton's picture

Aaaaand score one for Walt! One correct prediction down, seven to go... :)

Always great to see blogs from any of you, on any topic! Thanks for sharing your opinions & passion for movies, Walt!

Kelli just said everything I was planning to say (except the Phillies thing - I've been a Braves fan since birth)! We really do love hearing anything and everything from you.

Walt, Fun stuff. Thanks for sharing. I'll go with "The Artist" in a slight edge over "Hugo". (Best Picture for Artist, Best Director for Hugo, perhaps.) Sorry "The Artist" is on your "boo" list. It's a great one, in my opinion. I'd like to see Moneyball to win for Adapted Screenplay. Like your Top Ten list, too. Have fun!

Walt...I for one, enjoy reading EVERYTHING you write about. I love your enthusiam for your Mets (sorry..."Go Phillies!"). I love the SNC info but I know that SNC is not your whole life and like I enjoy getting to know all about my family and friends....I feel the same way about the members of SNC. I consider you all to be part of my extended family. So please continue to talk movies, sports, food (love the food and restaurant tweets) and anything else that is on your mind. I love hearing all about what you are doing on and off the stage!! Thank you also for sharing so much of your life with us Chasers...we are super grateful!! See ya in April!!
Gaelle's picture

btw Walt, feel free to blog anytime you like about the sports you're enjoying and the food you're eating :)
Maria Fulton's picture

Can't wait to watch the Oscars while reading your tweets!! This is gonna be epic!!! (BTW, you should blog more! I love reading them!!)

I'm not a movie theater goer....too sensitive to other people talking and making candy wrapper noises, usually at the same time, plus the amount of people themselves. (Had a wonderful opportunity to see The Wizard of Oz on the big screen several years ago for an anniversary special, and there were no more than a dozen people in the theater. Two of them were a father and his four-year-old boy, not far from us. to whom he narrated everything after it happened. It's hard for me to enjoy a social event when I want to kill someone.) That being said... I will definitely have to look up some of these to see. I am only mildly embarrassed to say that I own The King's Speech but have not watched it, as I want my husband to watch it with me, and he's not in the mood at the right time. I appreciate the reviews and find it interesting how they do or don't go along with what I've read in posted/printed reviews so far. Thanks for your thoughts. And be any Walt you want to be. Nice to hear from you!
Gabriella's picture

I enjoyed the blog:) I have some movie catching up to do...
Gaelle's picture

Nice Blog. I like the reviews! I saw A Separation and I truly hated it...it was an agony. But that's just me I guess, as the entire universe seems to love it so much.. it won the French César for best foreign movie last friday night and it's back in movie theatres in Paris. But as for me I'll never EVER see that movie again. I saw the Artist of course and I cannot be unbiased as Jean Dujardin already is my favorite actor. I saw him playing so many different roles over the years, I can't help it, I just hope he wins. He's a truly gifted actor even if "The Artist" is not for everyone, I agree with Walt on that. It's very unusual. And about The Iron Lady I've always wondered why did they choose an american actress to play a british woman? Don't boo me please, I'm neither american nor british, I'm not taking any side, I'm just curious :) But I do love Meryl Streep, she's magnificent. And I agree with Walt, she should win. And finally, is it just me or Woody Allen's movies doesn't seem verry popular in the united states? ;)

Thanks for the blog, Walt. I follow @SportsWalt since I like sports too, We care about what you do in your down time as well. Have a great Oscar Day, and I'll keep this up tonight to see if your picks pan out! :)

Thanks, Walt. And I agree with, "Bravo Thomas Horn - 1st role ever!?!?" And I bet you're right about "The Artist" win, unfortunately...

Thanks for the blog, Walt. I always appreciate your opinions!

Aww, I love when I see the words "A Rare Walt Blog"....would not mind if you left "Rare" out! Thanks for keeping us entertained. If the singing gig thing doesn't work out, you would be a great movie reviewer. (Just to clarify, um, the singing gig is working out just fine!) :)

Nice blog, Walt! I haven't seen as many movies this year as I usually do, so it's nice to read your reviews. And I still care about your tweets even when they're about things not related to SNC. :-)
