A Special Message About Cameras At SNC Shows

Dear Friends, and Fans of Straight No Chaser,

Thanks to all of you for your wonderful support of not only SNC, but also those who work behind the scenes everyday to bring our show to your cities all over the world!

Part of running a tour involves rules and standards that are applied in every venue. One of those involves our camera and photo policy. As you may know, we are very liberal with our policy that allows for photography and video taping; provided that each person uses good judgment in both the taking of photos/video and the scope of the equipment used.

Our daily security meeting with each venue staff covers our very liberal photo policy and instructs them, in very clear terms to allow you to reasonably use your cameras.

As a matter of principle, to insure that all photos, and videos taken at all SNC shows are used strictly for your personal archives and enjoyment, we do instruct venue security to alert me of any professional video gear, and larger than average camera set ups. Additionally, they receive clear orders to allow you, and your camera access to the show. However, they are asked to contact me to approve the aforementioned camera gear prior the show.

Moving forward, here are few tips to help you, and your choice of camera so you can avoid the unwanted scrutiny of venue security.

    1. If you have a larger camera, or obviously professional rig, please be aware that you may be questioned. Make wise choices in the cameras that you bring to concerts.
    2. Make plans to arrive at least 30 minutes early so that in the unlikely event you are detained, security can find me, or a member of our tour staff to come meet you and approve the equipment.
    3. Please, be kind and courteous to the venue staff. They are only doing their jobs.
    4. Recognize that larger theaters, casinos and arenas will have a large staff, and much greater security. Please understand that they have long-standing, engrained policies, and not every member of the house staff may wish to recognize, or have been briefed by their supervisor properly as to our revision of their rules.
    5. We will do our best to assist you, given proper time to respond. Note that Twitter, and Facebook are not effective, or efficient ways of contacting us, and especially during the last minutes before a show. Please go through the proper channels at the venue.

Thank you again for all of your friendship and support!

    All the best,

    Richard Korby
    SNC Tour Manager

I am going to the show at the Sovereign Center in Reading, PA in April and I have a Digital SLR. Will I have difficulties getting in?

Thanks for the information. Personally, I am happy that large, professional equipment is not allowed, since photos and videos are being shot from seats, and it would be very distracting and might block the view of some concert goers. I love seeing the video I take and having others share their experiences, so I do thank SNC for their very, fan-friendly, policy.

Mr Korby can you please tell me why some venues are not allowing pics with the guys at the M&G? Was at AC last night, and was told only signatures ONLY. We could take pics OF they guys, but not with the guys? What's up with this? Was very disappointed. Thanks.......Jane

I was thrilled to attend the Nov. 22 show at the Beacon Theatre in NYC. What a wonderful show -- THANKS! It was mentioned that SNC was going to be on PBS again on Dec. 3rd. I have check both my local station's line-up and that of PBS itself. I cannot find any mention of SNC being on. Any info on when that will happen? Thanks.

The other "issue" with cameras is that even though the venue might allow pictures to be taken, they do not "allow" you to use the flash on the camera (as in the Meyerhoff in Baltimore). Even though I saw several other concert go'ers taking flash pictures, I was told by one of the ushers that I couldn't use my flash. At first I was a little bummed... cause I wasn't sure how my pictures would turn out. But much to my happiness... the almost 200 pictures I took after the "no-flash" rule turned out better than the 5 or so I took before it... LOL. I even got some awesome "shadow" pictures that I probably wouldn't have gotten if I had used the flash!

I was one of the detained...at the Mohegan Sun Show. I showed up over 45 minutes early and they refused to let my camera in because it was "professional"...I told them it was my everyday camera, which it is, and still, nothing. I asked them to contact Korby and they refused, indicating that "if I knew Korby then I would have a way to contact him" (this was after explaining *who* Korby is)...all I had at that point was Twitter and I tried desperately to get someone, even though it was pre-show and I knew people would be busy. I even showed a screenshot of the Tweet that Randy sent when I had issues with Chautauqua's photo policy. Nothing. I ended up having to coat check my camera and had no pictures of the show. I hope (upon hope) that the house managers pass the information on to their staff...while I still had fun at the show, as I always do, I was so bummed that I had no pictures. As an aside, thank you so much for all that you do. It is truly appreciated more than anything.

Thank you so much Mr. Korby for the advice and for allowing us, SNC fans, to bring in our cameras into the concerts/shows. It is really something to be able to take pictures or videos...we get the chance to immortalize the moments when these 10 WONDERFUL GUYS showcase their talents and we get to have a memento of a wonderful night of listening and watching them perform. KUDOS to you Sir!!!

Thanks for this post, Korby. You guys are awesome, and we sincerely appreciate you guys taking the time to clear up a few things for us. Just saw that you'll be in my hometown next year, and can't wait to see you guys!

AND, I have to add to my comments - Kyle and the lighting guys (I am terrible with names :-( sorry) are some of the nicest men I know. They are so busy, but always have time to talk to the fans. All of you are the BEST!!!

Thanks Korby. You are fantastic! You do such a wonderful job; and I know we fans do not say it enough! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!!

i want to say something about Mr. Richard Korby that i know alot of you already know but that i realized again on Sunday. After the 730 show, a couple of us wanted to get the set list for signatures in the M/G line. We asked Korby and he said..."Ask Bob." i was thinking ....who in the world is Bob and why is Korby, King Manager, deferring to someone else??? And i found out. Bob is the man who taught Korby how to do what Korby does so well. Bob is totally and truly awesome. And then i was thinking, what kind of man, in the music industry these days, would defer to and tell us that anything we liked about Korby came from learning from Bob? Who does that these days? No one really. Except for Korby. Humble, wonderful, talented, amazing, kind, generous, terribly capable, totally in charge but totally accessible Korby. Not only did my admiration grow for Korby then, but also for the totality of SNC. They surround themselves with men who don't drag them down, but rather lift them up...making the entire package-from Trist and Blake, and Korby and the 10 guys and KMerch and anyone else that i have missed (sorry)- complete and wonderful. Thank you.

Mr. Korby, thanks for the heads up! I'll attend my 4th SNC concert in Atlanta next month and yes, my camera is professional grade. I love taking pictures at the concerts and hope things go smoothly as usual at this one. My only other camera is my phone.

Thanks to a migraine on Sunday, I was not hinking clearly. Like the start time of the afternoon show at Hershey. This meant I arrived at the venue late. Ergo, I was in the lobby with venue personnel trying to explain my "professional" camera. Thank goodness, while speaking to the third person, K-Merch happened by. "Kyle!" Yeah, I was allowed to take the contraband camera inside (shrugs from venue personnel). Yay, Team SNC! Thanks, Kyle.

Thank you for allowing the taking of picture at your concerts. You won't believe how much more you added to my 12 y.o. daughter's experience being able to take pics w her ipod. We all had a great time!

Thank you for the very helpful information, Mr. Korby!

May I add my thank you to all those already expressed here. Thank you not only for this specific information, but also THANK YOU to SNC and their entire team for allowing pics and video at their concerts. I believe I have a special appreciation for it because I used to participate in another musical fandom where they performer's body guard would roam the crowd during concerts, taking fans' cameras and/or camera cards. While it was difficult to feel sorry for those who knew "the rules" and chose to break them anyway, these mid-concert confrontations were also very disruptive to all of the fans in the vicinity of the culprit. I certainly understand that every artist has the right to have whatever policy regarding this type of thing that they want and I certainly understand why most don't allow it, but it has been my experience that banning such activities only makes fans want to do it even more. Kudos to SNC for knowing that the vast, vast, vast majority of fans just want a memento of their concert-going experience and will not abuse the privilege. And kudos to SNC for knowing that happy fans with sharable evidence of the great concert they just attended certainly isn't a bad marketing tool either. ;-) Thanks again!

Thanks to all of you who work so hard to provide us Chasers with great shows time after time. We appreciate the approachability and appreciation that you all show those of us who attend. Glad to see the heads-up regarding cameras/videos and equipment. Hope it prevents confusion for some in the future. So loved the Louisville show and now looking forward to Indy and Paducah!! :)

LOL Julie...i was thinking of you and Kary whilst reading this post. Korby, you ARE the best...and thank you for allowing photos and videos...and for giving us the heads up on this one.

Very much appreciated info, Korby. My camera would fit in my pocket, but I know there have been questions over the last couple of years as venues have tried to pull power plays, intentionally or otherwise. Great idea to lay out "tips" (read: rules, or a word to the wise) ahead of time. Thanks for once again thinking of the fans. :-)

Thank you, Richard! You're the best!

Great advice, Korby....thanks!! Julie, as I was reading this, I was thinking of you.....lol

Korby: Thanks so much for the info. I am always a little nervous when I walk into a concert and am afraid I will not be able to take pics. Now I will rest easy. As everyone says~~you & SNC are the BEST!!!

Thanks for being so gracious and allowing the videos and photos. That is just one of the may things that set SNC apart from others. It is also a work in progress with the venues and security when things change up for them. Cameras and video technology can be a distraction for people in the audience so thank you for the policies you all have in place. The "behind-the-scenes" folks don't get enough thanks and praise for what they do. Thanks for keeping it together on the road!
Diana L.'s picture

Thanks Korby - As one who travels with a camera that fits in my purse...it's never been an issue. Well, maybe I now know that you have most excellently briefed the staff :) It is kind of fun to watch the face of uninformed security as the announcement about cameras and video for your concerts is made...the best was at Toronto when one of the girls shrugged her shoulders and stage whispered a loud "oops!". This after shooing down a number of cameras. Thanks for continuing to do all you can to make the concerts so enjoyable and memorable for us - even when we don't directly see all of your hard work.
snemtuda's picture

Thanks for posting this Richard. There is nothing like dampening your SNC excitement when you are being told your camera won't be allowed in. I'll be sure to ask for you when questioned again......so in 2 weeks. :) Thank you so much for all that you do for the fans. You all are simply amazing!

Thanks Korby! We all love to see the fruits of your liberal photo and video policy. We will do our best to abide by it; right, Julie? HaHa! I love your photos, and everyone's! Thanks, SNC for sharing your music and videos/photos from your shows! Nobody is like SNC - they're a cut above.
ChaserJulie's picture

Why do I have the feeling this should start: "Dear Julie...." Well, Korby, I guess I'll see you before the show!!! Thanks for the heads up! =)

Good to know for future reference, Korby. Thanks to you and everyone who makes it possible for Chasers to take amazing photos and videos with this liberal policy. See you in Cleveland!
