We at SNCmusic.com are curious - what other music do SNC fans listen to?

How do you feel about The Sing Off, other college and/or professional a cappella groups or Ben Folds' latest record?

Know of any really cool a cappella videos, online resources, or songs?

Share them with us below or upload them in our videos secton!

My kind of question! I'll list my fav male a cappella groups. (Don't forget the chorus's though.) I've gotten into barbershop but some of these are more a cappella. Some have already been mentioned. The best of the best: Gas House Gang, Bluegrass Student Union and OC Times. Also: Crossroads, Max Q, Realtime, Gotcha!, Vocal Spectrum, Acoustix, Storm Front, Keepsake, 3 Men and a Melody, The Ritz, Nexus, 'Round Midnight, Old School, Men in Black, Platinum, 139th Street Quartet, Four Voices, Marquis, da Capo, Second Edition (if anyone knows where/how I can get their 1 CD please let me know!) Some of these groups are new and some are long ago disbanded but they are still awesome. If you like barbershop, look for arrangements by David Wright. He is the Master! Everything he does is great! And, I must mention my favorite local (Richmond, Virginia) ensemble. The group that got me into a cappella in the first place. A 16-18 member group called Soundworks. www.soundworkschorus.org I actually missed the Sing-Off when it was on before. I'll be sure to watch it next time. I'm not that into college a cappella--too much vocal percussion for me. I just don't care for it. I bought Ben Folds' college a cappella CD and gave it to a friend because I didn't like it. There were a couple of decent songs on it. Google: Storm Front Jukebox Saturday Night for a funny video. Sorry, I don't have the address handy. I'll be going to the Barbershop Harmony International Competition for the first time this July. I'm so excited about it! It's the best for a cappella! PLEASE NOTE: For various reasons, this is the third time I've typed this! If it doesn't post this time, I give up! If it's a double post, please forgive me!

I haven't made it through all of the other posts, so I'm not sure if the group from Michigan State University has been mentioned. Accafellas. I'm from Michigan so maybe I'm partial. But I've found some videos on youtube and they are pretty talented. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02ej-WoDB8Y&feature=related - Amazing wedding proposal http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=msu+accafellas&aq=0 - youtube search results

If you like acapella music, check out Messiah's Men @ www.messiahsmen.com. They have one CD out and are releasing their second CD, "Full Circle" in August 2010. They are also going to Liberia in December 2010, accompanied by Keith Lancaster and Acapella along with Durant. They are a non-profit with their mission to give back to their homeland of Liberia.

Oh yeah, I can't forget HS! Love them too. I just wish Shirt! Tie! Khaki! was available. =( Every time I try to order it, I can't. Sad times.

Prior to finding the incredible original YouTube post by Randy, I was never a fan of a capella. It was all about barbershop, sweet adelines, and most was awful. I used to a lot of singing in choirs, school, church, competed while in school in contests. Loved to sing, but for several years opportunities became few and far between because of where we lived at the time. Haven't done much since then. SNC really made me interested in music again but I am amazed because SNC makes a capella sound like there is instrumentation behind the voices. Have been amazed by their sound ever since and have lost interest in those artists that have to have tons of accompaniement as their quality of voice is disguised by the instrumentation--SNC IS A PURE SOUND and haven't seen or heard anything like before or since! Keep up the terrific work guys-----LOVE IT!

Totally with you on Penn Masala, SJ. Lovestoned is probably my favorite track of theirs! Also, about a month ago, a friend of mine sent me a cd by Hyannis Sound. This is another group whose membership changes pretty much every year. (Tyler was even once a member!) These guys spend the summer in Hyannis, MA doing shows and having fun. Check them out here: http://www.hyannissound.com/ My favorite track right now is their cover of Marc Broussard's "Rocksteady".

Big fan of Rockapella, Tonic Sol Fa (amazing), and an awesome groupd called Penn Masala. They're college group from Penn State, not too different from SNC. Their group numbers vary from year to year, but they usually have about 10 members. The difference with them is that they are an all Hindi group that incorporates their language with contemporary pop songs...i.e. Over My Head, Lovestoned, etc...and they do it in a really smooth way that makes you just want to keep listening. I really love Over My Head...if you guys get the chance to, check it out.

I don't really listen to any other a cappella groups much, but I think it would be awesome if you guys did "Star Wars Medley" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGYAPr6UKhs or the Glee version of "Don't Stop Believin'" (or a better version if you can make one) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUZwdbeS2mM

I really like Van Canto - a cappella metal band from Germany. All instruments (exclude drums) that are played by musicians in a regular metalband now are imitated by their voices. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Shw3lYC6DsY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBxCl2TJNnQ

Other a cappella groups exist besides the infamous and fabulous SNC??? WHAT?!?!! Blasphemy, surely. There is only SNC. ;)

Yes, Ladysmith Black Mambazo! Hadn't thought of them.

I like Sweet Honey in the Rock and Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Caught last couple episodes of "Sing Off" and really enjoyed the show. Hope they do it again. Increased my appreciation of the possibilities in a cappella singing.

"SIX" also known as the Knudsen Brothers. Voted best show in Branson the past 2 years.

there's 3 really good groups i've heard but they're not from the US. the first one is the Voca People, from Tel Aviv, Israel. the second one is The Real Group from Stockholm, Sweeden, and the third one is A'cappella Expresss from Moscow, Russia (and the 3 's' are intentional. that's how they spell their name)

Well there is a good group that has had several different members over the years. The group is called Acappella, they are a church group but their voices are beautiful especially the groups from the '90s. I was also in an a cappella group in college. Singing is one of my favorite things and I cannot wait for your album to come out. Besides a cappella I listen to alternative rock, hard rock, and metal. Not quite the same as a cappella, but I guess that's who I am, wierd.

I have always enjoyed listening to The Nylons. More recently, I have enjoyed our local A Capella Group from Seattle, The Coats! I hope to see SNC when they come to Seattle in May! And I look forward to the day when I can purchase more music than just playing the Christmas songs on the website over and over again! Of course, there's always YouTube.....thanks, guys! Keep up the great music!

While I was cruising through YouTube I happened on a Cuban a cappella group called Vocal Sampling. It gets really interesting at 4:15 and goes off-the-chart crazy at 4:45!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80UevGcOmGc.

OK, just discovered a group this morning while surfing the web... definitely a fan of Firedrill now! http://www.firedrillband.com

Thanks for posting the invite. I love SNC's version of The Lion Sleeps Tonight and I was especially struck by the short bit when they harmonize like Ladysmith Black Mambazo. And I was reminded of a song I loved from the movie Mighty Joe Young. It's called Windsong. There's a vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIpFywiUMoc. It's long, but at 1:30 there's an intro and the song runs through 4:30. The vid also has lyric "cards" in it as well as the English translation in the Info section.

My all time favorite ever since i was 11 years old has been Rockapella. Thanks to them i fell in love with acapella music. I also support and enjoy Chapter 6.

My all-time favorite, since I was a little kid, is the Voices of Liberty (aka the Liberty Voices, depending on where you hear them). They sing daily at the American pavilion at Epcot and no matter how many times I've heard them, they always give me goosebumps!! (And of course, I've started working at Epcot so I'll be a frequent visitor lol) Here's a video of them singing one of my favs, "Shenandoah":http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNYuQ-xON74 I also love the Dapper Dans! They're fun, but not as good as VoL. I also listen to Ball in the House. They're out of Boston. Not nearly as good as SNC or VoL, but they came to my school when I was younger and I fell in love with their CD. Here's a clip from when they were on the Today show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHuADmPWM30

Aren't they awesome, Shaina? I know one of them (Tim). My mom used to sing with him when I was younger. They are fabulous guys! As for the Dapper Dans, while they are still good, they aren't quite the caliber they used to be. But if you ever see them on Main Street, stop and take a listen. They sound fab.

Hey, Sarah Liz, The Perfect Gentlemen actually came to my school! So cool; I love barbershop and Disneyland (so the Dapper Dans were a given), but I've never actually seen the Dans live... The Perfect Gentlemen were SO GREAT, though! :D

Well, in addition to SNC, I love Rockapella and The Kings Singers. Especially "6 Characters in Search of an Opera" you guys should do that! It's hilarious.
Sarah Liz's picture

I almost forgot... this group isn't strictly acapella, but they are my fave local barbershop group. They are called The Perfect Gentlemen: http://www.theperfectgentlemen.us/ They put on a really fun show, do local educational shows, and are all former members of the Disneyland Dapper Dans.

That's a great video of Ambassadors. My first love was barbershop until SNC came along. :-)
