US money is widely accepted. In fact, most of the prices on various items is in US $. The only place that you may have difficulty is outside of Cozumel in the smaller villages (should you go sightseeing on the mainland).
BLB Red, if you're going to shop in Cozumel stay away from the shops on the pier. They are usually overpriced-trying for the last minute business for passengers who didn't have time to shop in town.
I recommend Los Cincos Soles in San Miguel for local crafts and other gift items. They also have a great little restaurant in back called Pancho's Backyard. Try the coconut ice cream with Kahlua sauce for dessert. Another good (and safe) place to eat in town is Guido's or Las Palmeras. There are some little cantinas along the main road but stay away. They will try to scam tourists-I know from experience. I actually had to call the police to settle a bill.
Thanks for the recommendations. I'm not going on the Chaser Cruise, but my husband and I are going on a 4-day cruise to Key West & Cozumel in February. (If we hadn't already booked our cruise when they announced the Chaser Cruise, we'd be going in October.) This may be a silly question, but I've never been out of the United States before. Do I need to get some pesos for my trip, or do the shops around Cozumel take US Dollars?
I would love to do that too!!! I ride daily so I try to find someplace to ride when on vacation/traveling so I can say that I did!
Also, check out Xel-Ha in Mexico. Great beach on a man-made lagoon, food, drinks shopping. It's a great place to spend the day or afternoon.
As far as Key West goes, the bar Sloppy Joe's is usually open very early as it is the place Hemingway hung out. There is also a Ripley's Museum, a great little shop called Bird in Hand and watch out for Kermit's for all things Key Lime. There is also a Birkenstock sandle factory iin Key West.
Those of you looking at Chicehn Itza tours, it is a very long trip but well worth it. If you use the tour offered by the ship you need not worry about timing. The ship will wait for any and all tours that run late as long it is the tour they sponsor. If you go on your own, it's up to you to be back on time.
I would like to do a horse trip too. Might need to coordinate one. Wont take the whole day and you can do stuff before or after as wanted...
WOOHOO! *inserthappydance* I am SO going horseback riding in Cozumel! Two and a half hours is plenty especially since my hubby doesn't really care for it. Totally affordable too! *anotherhappydance* Now I just have to remember to buy a waterproof camera and poncho... and to check on the good eats of the place! Thanks for posting this Marcaich! *resumeshappydancing*
Wonder if we could get Rome to ride? Or has he crossed horseback riding off his bucket list?
I kind of like to keep things open for whatever...walking through shops, absorbing culture, taking pictures
Have to look up more cruise friendly tours then.....
Just looked it up and the Chichen Itza tour is approximately 11 hours long.
If the tours really are 10-11 hours long then that is cutting it a bit close time-wise with having to get back to the ship by a certain time.
Don't know @Eileen...I just happened to see it on the website that Carla put up earlier!
the first cruise i went on we went to Paradise Beach in Cozumel (http://www.paradise-beach-cozumel.com/) it was one of i'm sure lots of nice beaches. also the shopping right by the port was a lot of fun -- we got lots of free tequila from shop owners trying to sell us stuff, lol.
I've been to Key west lots, there are great tours, i like the Shipwreck museum, and lots of shopping and good food (Margaritaville is a MUST) I know a good art gallery with great tshirts (I have a friend with some of her work there :-) ) Theres evena free beach, but its a bit away from the docks.
IF I go (and that's a BIG if), I'm gonna have to watch my budget for onshore fun. Am I understanding the website info that the Chichen Itza tours are 10 or 11 hours long? Not sure we have time for that. The Tulum tours are shorter & it *looks* like if we had enough people going it wouldn't cost much per person. Prices were listed like $220 for 1-8 people. I assume that means however many people went would split the cost?
Again, I am a HUGE maybe, so my "2 cents' worth" is not worth much as far as any decision-making at this point.
I did this exact same cruise 2 years ago for my job. Key West is great and there are fabulous bars ( the original Margaritaville) BUT the boat docks at 7:30 a.m. and you have to be back on the boat before 1:00 p.m. There's a good trolly tour that takes you around- Hemmingway's house, the cute Victorians and the southern most tip of the U.S. Cozumel is the whole day so there's more time to do things. I didn't see the ruins but I think that would be fantastic . It is hurricane season so bring a rain poncho just in case. I went in Nov and we had some rough seas even then. Should be a great trip! Even if the weather is bad there's always the great entertainment to look forward to back on the ship!
I've never been to Key West but there is a lot to do in Cozumel! If you like the party scene (and really good guacumole and libations), there is Margaritaville. The shopping is great. I have heard excellent things about a private beach club, Nachi Cocum. Apparently, they treat you really well...and drinks and buffet are included in the price. We are about to check it out in a couple of weeks. I'll let you know if it lives up to the hype. My husband and son did a Segway and snorkeling excursion once and loved it (only problem was that they wanted to buy a Segway when we got home! ;-) Anyone been to Key West? I know there is a Margaritaville there too, but that's the extent of my knowledge.
The Mayan ruins are really cool. I was there when i was about 15... I was of course, bored at that age, but thinking back to them, they were pretty awesome. There is another excursion that Carnival use to do, it was a speedboat (you control your own boat) and take a 30 min ride to a private beach, and then relax there for an hour or two and the ride your speed boat back to the pier .. that was a lot of fun. Plus they fed you. I always look for the tours where they feed you. LOL
Chichen Itza is really cool if you get to pick and choose...been there! It looks just like the pictures, but it's really impressive right up close. At the time I vistited there, you were still able to climb (steps, with a rope to hold onto), but I think there was some vandalism, so don't know if you are still able to do that or not. Very interesting spot to see!
or this... ok dreaming is good, right?

Ooh, I'm all for the ruins tour.
