Hey everyone! Just a reminder that the Sing Off starts Monday, December 6. If you didn't see it last year, be sure to tune in this time around. I thought it was a fun program that showcased a lot of great talent! I think one of my favorite parts of the show was the start of each episode where all the groups sang an ensemble number together! I don't even want to begin to understand how that was tackled!
I look forward to reading everyone's comments about the show and their favorite groups!
~Julie

Julie, Shaina had to leave before that part... but I was still there. Ears weren't bleeding, but I did cringe a few times... SNC does have us spoiled!
Probably wouldn't have seen us... we were waaaaaay up near the back on the side... kinda out of view. I saw myself once, waaaaaaay behind Ben Folds during the end of the opening number. And only cause I knew where to look.
It was such a great experience, though! I did a write up of the night from my POV of the experience, if anyone is interested. http://sarahtwilley.posterous.com/the-sing-off-finale-experience
I'm with you Kary - SCS needs a record deal, too.
I hope Committed and SCS go on tour. Separately or together.
@Julie - Jerry can't stand for very long - if you look back he was seated a lot and helped off the stage. I think the cane let him move around more without someone holding him up. "Fix You" def belongs to SNC.
I hope next season is extended and airs once a week.
I was also disappointed the groups were used as backup for the celebs. What was the point? And, what was with Jerry Lawson and his cane? He was weilding it around sometimes - coulda put someone's eye out! (lol) "Fix You" was more than a little hard to listen to. SNC has us spoiled! But, it was nice to see SCS invite the other members to share the stage on that one. (Was wondering if Shaina's ears were bleeding in the audience! LOL) BTW, didn't see Shaina on camera, did anyone else?
The groups finished as I exptected they would, but, it was a great showing, all the same. I enjoyed the "lots of singing." I would like to hear more from SCS, as well as the Backbeats! Congrats to Committed!!
Until next season!! =)
I was disappointed with the first part - celebrity collabs. Why were the acappella groups singing BACKUP for the "celebrities"?? Shouldn't they be showcasing the groups instead? (I would rather listen to Jerry Lawson than Nicole Scherz!) But the groups were on more later. They all did great!!
I would have been happy with Committed or SCS. I hope SCS gets a record deal also. There is room in the market for them both.
Thanks Julie, I just came over here to put something up about what I heard, about it running an extra 1/2 hr, so thanks for the update! I'm just now starting to watch it from the beginning on the dvr, & Bozy II Men just sang with Committed! I'm soooo loving this!
Tonight's the night!!! Who's it going to be??? (FYI, the show is not extended an extra half hour.) Of course, I'm excited to see who the winner will be, but I'm just as excited to see what the opening ensemble number will be!!!
TheSingOff is really great entertainment. The 4 groups left are all very good, (although not near what SNC is). I hear the ratings have been so good, and increased so much with each episode that they are extending the finale next week an extra half-hour. A Cappella is going mainstream, and with Ben Folds as a judge, people are learning a little something. Nice job Deke Sharon and NBC. Next episode, which will be telecast LIVE and is the FINALE is Monday 12/20 8PM EST, 7PM CST. Tune in! Here is the Ben Folds recap if you aren't familiar with the groups: http://www.nbc.com/sing-off/on-key-with-ben-folds/
Absolutely Julie, you can hear all the stomping & such from the boxes where they sit, & I remember after one particularily great performance one of the others was up in their box doing that, I bow to you in your greatness thing. That was soooo cool!
I think the judges give fair and constructive criticism in such a positive way. I also really, really love how the groups cheer for each other during their performances!! It's nice to see that they get along so well.
@Sarah, I had to laugh when you said Ben Folds uses technical music terms that you totally know. The first thing that popped into my head was "sic"!!! LOL
Well, there you go!
I don't know anything about the pussycat dolls, except that I do remember there being like the original founder maybe? on DWTS. Makes sense now.
I think I missed most of the Boys II Men thing. I've usually been about a decade behind in music, until SNC coincidentally. But, they do oldies, so maybe that's it. Much of their 80s & 90s stuff I'd never heard before, I was in the 60s & 70s.
I am sooooo musically challenged! When they're saying, do you all know how hard that is, I'm like noooooo! I'm clueless! I also think I'm basing my love of the different groups by the songs they're doing more then their technical abilities, cause I have no way to measure that.
Ditzy would definitely be the word, Donna. She also the lead singer of the Pussycat Dolls.
I LOVE Ben Folds. Especially as a judge. I love that he uses technical music terms that I totally know. I love that he doesn't dumb down his comments.
And I will always love Shawn. Boyz II Men was my boyband. I love them.
I finally got to watch the 2nd that I'd missed online, & then moved to the next two. I didn't want to come back here til I did cause didn't want to know who was going to be leaving before got to see it.
This is some great music, & the wednesday stuff was great!
I didn't know any of those judges before this, & the woman talks about being on DWTS?
How the heck did I miss her? I only missed the 1st season of that I think.
That Ben guy has got to be the most laid back person ever, & I love Shawn's theatrics & the woman's comment about a musical orgasm, that was sooo funny. She seems high or just ditzy some of the time, or maybe it's just an act, but I'm so glad these people are such nicer judges then on some of the other shows. You certainly don't have to be so nasty, I think that's so uncalled for.
There are much better ways to get a point across.
I don't know who to root for, I'm so conflicted!
@Julie ~ I noticed! I actually said to my empty living room "Niiiiiiiiiice! Sticking the group name in there!" (Yes, I do talk to my living room often.)
I can't decide if I want Committed or Street Corner Symphony to win. I'm an R&B girl and Committed is awesome at that, but I'm not into gospel. Street Corner Symphony will fit in with today's music market very well, and Jeremy is awesome!!
Ok. How many of you noticed Street Corner Symphony sliding their group name into their rendition of "Down on the Corner"? Smooth move!
it so is, Tina....
I'm quite bummed that Groove For Thought got cut on Monday :(
They sang 'Creep' from Radiohead. He did a really good job with the song and showed that he could sing at two different levels confidently.
Thanks for posting this, Julie! It gave me the kick I needed to start watching. I'm glad I did too! I missed a little of the beginning yesterday and I was wondering if anyone knows what the very first song Street Corner Symphony sang was? I was loving what little I got to heard of it... Thanks!
Ditto Tina - This years' The Sing Off is the bomb. It Rocks!! Who would have Ever thought A Cappella would be Prime Time with huge ratings! WTG Deke Sharon and NBC. AC's time has come, the show is well done, and Ben Folds RULES as a judge.
Yes, Tina. You may. =)
Can I just say that this season's The Sing Off is the bomb.com? That is all.
Julie - I agree completely now that you mention it about Mr. Lawson already having a professional career. Peter, the lead singer of the Backbeats is an INCREDIBLE soloist and should have been the one singing last night in the more important part of the competition. They did good for being strictly a Jazz a capella group but showing more diversity would have been great!
Committed's first song last night was kind of upsetting because they were kind of changing the song from being up-beat to a slower kind of song. On the guilty pleasures portion, I have to admit, was a great song. I hate the original, even though it's easy to get stuck in my head, but when Committed sang it, it was heavenly sound to the ears.
Cgarcia0524 - I think I would appreciate Jerry Lawson's group more if Jerry Lawson were not a part of it. He has already had a professional career. I agree, the members of that group do an amazing job, but I can't get past the fact that Mr. Lawson is on the show, IMHO.
The judges were right last night that Groove for Thought should have distanced themselves from their typical jazz style for their "rock" selection. Would have been nice to see some diversity from them. LOVED On the Rocks "Pour Some Sugar On Me"!! Really enjoying The Backbeats, and of course, Committed. Street Corner Symphony is in there, but may be hanging by a thread? I'm just sad this competition will soon be over!
Is nobody appreciating Jerry Lawson's group at all? For an ol' man to be able to hit those notes and put the notes out there with such power from the bottom is incredible. In my opinion it's going to be a toss up for first place though between three different groups. The Backbeats being one, Street Corner Symphony being the 2nd one and the 3rd group in my opinion in the final episode is going to be Committed. I have no doubts that Committed is going to take it all, though. They mesh so well, it's pleasant to the ears exactly how Boys II Men was.
Wow, how did I not know about this show before?? Thank you all for opening my eyes! I am watching the first episode online right now, have seen through the Wiffenpoofs and man, were they amazing!
lol @Julie... Told ya, right?
I love Committed (Passion mixed with talent always = AWESOMESAUCE!), Street Corner Symphony (Jeremy has an excellent voice but they all sing like there are more of them. They flow like butter!), and Peter from Groove For Thought (Just Peter).
And Shawn Stockman is my favorite person right now!!!
Tara's finally been committed!!!!! LOL (Sorry, Tara. I couldn't resist!)
I forgot all about yesterdays episode as I was home sick & slept all day & nite!
I hate watching on the computer, but I guess it's that or nothing, & it's too good to miss!
Number of group contestants dwindles and yet succeeding episodes will still each be two hours each? Talk about stretching for commercials.
